Finding ways to supplement your income in college
April 26, 2012
College is expensive, there's no way around it. Even at the most affordable schools with incredible scholarship opportunities, you'll probably need to find ways to earn a little extra cash for eating out, going to the movies, traveling and enjoying off-campus life from time to time. Here are some tips for supplementing your income in college.
Internships
While many internships available to college students provide academic credit toward graduation, you can also find positions that are paid. Contact your career services department at school and see if there are any intern opportunities available with a stipend - even if it's only minimum wage.
Work-study
According to the U.S. Department of Education, there was $978,531,016 appropriated to work-study programs in the 2011 fiscal year. These jobs enable students to work at on-campus positions such as in the college library, cafeteria, study rooms or any other student-friendly job. Check with your school to see if you're eligible to receive some of this financial aid.
Tutor
Students are always looking for assistance with class projects and studying for exams, so you might want to consider offering your expertise in a particular subject as a tutor. You can either offer your services independently, or work with your school to set up tutoring gigs.
