How to successfully write a college term paper

September 25, 2012

One of the most stressful parts of being a college student comes at the end of a semester, when many will need to complete term papers. In most cases, these require students to draw on information and skills learned over the entire length of a course to formulate a well-documented research paper. Students receiving money for college are under particular pressure because they need to achieve a certain grade in order to continue receiving aid.

Yet, in some instances, figuring out the more stringent standards can be tough. The following is a short guide to help new students with writing their term papers.

Step 1: Understand what the professor wants.
According to experts at College Atlas, one of the most important aspects of completing a term paper successfully is knowing what the instructor is looking for. In addition to carefully reading the assignment, the source suggests that a person talk to the professor face-to-face either after or before class.

Step 2: Choose the right topic.
It's important to remember that you will need to spend countless hours researching the topic of the paper, so make sure that it's something you feel passionate about. The source suggests, again, going to the professor of the class if you are having trouble narrowing down what you should focus on.

Step 3: Remember that research is important.
Once you have decided on exactly which topic is right, it's time to begin the research process. In a 2004 paper entitled "How To Write College Research Papers," Maryland Community College suggested that students use 3x5 index cards to document every piece of valuable information. This can be done via digital formats as well, using specific word processing programs to jot down the information that will prove to be helpful.

Step 4: Create the perfect outline.
Outlines can make the difference between a top grade and a flop. Carefully write the topic and subtopics that will be discussed in each section of the essay. This will make it far easier when it comes time to write.

Step 5: Perfect the draft process.
Now it's time to begin the writing. Using the research you've already completed, you can now illustrate all that you've learned. In most cases, you will have to complete several drafts, making changes as necessary. Reread the paper multiple times before handing it in. Once all these tasks have been completed, you will have a paper you can be proud of.
