Look into jobs that relate to your major while completing your degree

October 11, 2011

Relevant work experience is almost as important as having a degree when you're heading to a job interview. If you're looking for a part-time job while you're at school, investigating opportunities that relate to your major could give your resume a significant boost once you hit the job market.

While internships are great options that can help build work experience, most of them are unpaid or simply for credit, and you may want to put a bit of money in your pocket instead. For instance, if you're a journalism student, consult local newspapers with story ideas to see if you can do a bit of freelancing to build your portfolio.

If you're working in business or marketing, come up with a marketing proposal for a local business. Set a rate that can cover your costs and put a bit of extra money in your pocket. If you succeed, you can get an easy recommendation out of the deal and something to add to your resume.

Looking into college scholarships and grants before you get into school is another way to ease the expense of higher education and reduce your chances of long-term debt.
