How to attend college despite coming from a large family

December 22, 2011

It's not uncommon for families with more than one child to struggle to send their kids to college. More children means more tuition costs and fees, which can be financially hard on families that are already strapped for cash. If you're a high school student who wants to go to college, regardless of how many siblings you have, there are a few ways you can make it happen.

First, apply for college grants and scholarships to help you reduce the cost of tuition. Unlike education loans, this money does not have to be repaid. Oftentimes, all you have to do is submit a short essay in order to qualify for scholarships that can help you pay off college.

Next, get a job that pays well and can potentially curb your tuition costs and fees. Even if you can only work part-time, make sure that a portion of your paycheck is going toward a savings account to help pay for your college education.

Finally, think about attending a public school in your home state in order to avoid paying high tuition bills after graduation. Unlike private institutions, these schools are typically cheaper and more feasible for financially-struggling students.
