May 14, 2012

While college might seem like it's in the distant future if you're still only a freshman or sophomore in high school, it's never too early to start planning your application process. Not only will preparing yourself now help you secure significant scholarship opportunities down the line, but you'll also increase your odds of being accepted to the university of your choice. Here are three tips on high school initiatives that will boost your college applications.

AP classes
They might seem like a major headache, but advanced placement (AP) classes will be a huge help as your transition into college academics. In addition to helping you stand out as an ambitions candidate, AP credits can also be put toward college courses - giving you a head start on earning your degree before you even enter your freshman year.

PSAT
While academics are an important part of any college application, so is a solid score on the SAT. In fact, more than 1.5 million college-bound students completed the SAT in 2011, according to the College Board. However, preparing for this particular exam is far different than studying for a regular high school test, so taking the PSAT is a great introduction to its peculiar and challenging aspects in advance. Once you have an idea of what you're up against, you can begin developing strategies to ace the SAT down the road.

Extracurricular activities
Whether you're interested in sports, drama, music, community service or all of the above, extracurricular activities are a necessary component of any well-rounded college application. While you don't need to become a member of every club and organization in your school, demonstrating dedication to one or two particular interests will show your commitment to being an active and engaged member of society.
