Seeking out celebrity scholarships
July 12, 2012
While scholarship hunting usually requires a good deal of consideration and internet research, it can occasionally be as easy as kicking back with a basketball game or checking out the posters on your wall. If you have a favorite actor, comedian, football player, film director, musician or even writer, there's a good chance that celebrity might have his or her own scholarship. While most scholarships are dispersed by that individual's alma mater, this isn't always the case. Nevertheless, it might be worth checking whether your new school has any celebrity scholarships to its name.
Why pursue celebrity scholarships? One of the best reasons is that they're application requirements usually revolve around that individual's area of expertise. Alec Baldwin offers a scholarship to Tisch students specializing in Drama, while David Letterman's alma mater Ball State University carries the annual and up to $10,000 Letterman Telecommunications Scholarship. If you're a devotee of 90s sitcoms and go to public school the only thing you need to apply for Jerry Seinfeld's scholarship is an address in one of New York City's boroughs. Thankfully, you don't need to be a martial arts expert to win the Bruce Lee scholarship (though it can't hurt).
Remember to search far and wide for your scholarship opportunities. And sometimes search close to home as well - the TV's not a bad place to start!
