Seeking financial aid from government resources
November 18, 2011
It can be difficult to attend college if you don't have the financial means to pay for tuition and fees. However, the government has a number of resources available to individuals who are interested in earning a degree.
By filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), you may qualify for assistance from the U.S. Department of Education. However, there are a few requirements that you must meet in order to receive aid.
In addition to needing a Social Security number and U.S. citizenship, you must also have a General Education Development (GED) certificate or a high school diploma. The government also requires financial aid recipients to be enrolled in at least six hours of coursework in their efforts to earn a degree.
The amount of aid that each individual receives varies on a case-by-case basis. Depending on your current financial situation, you may receive less or more than your peers who are also attending college. However, you can also apply for college grants and scholarships to reduce the amount of tuition and fees. There are a number of financial resources available to you if you're interested in pursuing a postsecondary education.
