Recipients of Peyton Manning Scholarship to begin at University of Tennessee

June 21, 2012

For high school seniors Macy Harrison and Chris Barnes, the highlight of June 18 may not have been meeting star Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning. The two college-bound students joined Manning and the University of Tennessee (UT) chancellor and provost in a ceremony commending their accomplishments and awarding both scholarships to the university.

The scholarship offers the students a full ride to graduation and is funded by private gifts, academic awards garnered during Manning's time at UT as well as donations by Manning himself and his wife Ashley. This was the first year that Manning has added to the monetary fund, allowing the University to offer two scholarships instead of one.

"The University of Tennessee holds a special place in my heart," Manning said in a statement announcing the new donation. "Ashley and I are excited about the opportunity to award more deserving UT students with the Manning Scholarship."

Harrison has plans to major in sociology or social work and was a member of her school's volleyball team, while Barnes - a swimmer and fan of ultimate frisbee - intends to major in biochemistry with a potential double major incorporating chemical engineering. Both students are great examples of the benefits of hard academic work, community service and seeking out college scholarship opportunities.
