Professional women’s organization offers scholarships
November 19, 2012
The Zonta Club - an international group of executives and working people advocating for the advancement of women - has been known to provide college scholarships for single mothers, according to an article from GazetteXtra.
The online news provider points to a branch of the Zonta Club based in Janesville Wisconsin, which gave $5,000 in financial aid for single mothers to a pair of successful applicants from the Rock County community.
"This is bigger than just paying for someone's tuition. We want to support the family and help them with other needs they might have by finding or providing those resources for them to be successful," Sue Conley, Zonta member and executive director of the Community Foundation of Southern Wisconsin, told Gazettextra.
Nursing student Nicole Castillo told the news provider that taking care of two children - both under the age of 7 - was making it infeasible to afford more schooling, even though she saved for five years in order to further her education. She also said she's grateful for how the scholarship helps her cover costs while allowing her to balance school, work and family life.
