Encourage your kids to challenge themselves with AP courses in high school
October 26, 2011
While having a great GPA can certainly help your child's chances of getting into his first choice college, many institutions like to see that your child has challenged himself. When your high school student is entering his junior and senior years, be sure to encourage him to take some advanced classes to strengthen his transcript.
Advanced placement (AP) classes are great options for your child to accrue some college credits while improving his admissions package in the process. The curriculum is set up closely to a college course, so your child will be able to adjust to the academic rigors of the environment before he ever steps foot on campus.
While these classes are certainly harder, a college likes to see that a student has risen to the occasion to complete a more difficult course. Just be sure to keep track of your child's grades and encourage him to go for extra help when needed.
When the college admissions process starts, guide your child toward the many college scholarships and grants that are available that can drastically reduce the cost of tuition.
