A bit of advice for freshman year

October 8, 2012

During their final few years of high school, students may be too busy filling out scholarship application after scholarship application and saving up money for college to have enough space in their heads to think about what's going to happen after they finally take their first steps on their college campus. After all, dealing with the inundation of new faces, a new routine and possibly navigating a new city all at once can be mind-boggling.

Over the summer, USA Today published some tips for college it thought might be handy for freshmen. The news source advises new scholars to be open to making new friends. Many freshmen don't know anyone in their new and exciting surroundings very well, which makes them far more socially available than they might normally be. However, these novice collegiates should be aware that just because they made 50 new friends during their first week of college, that does not necessarily make them wildly popular. The same thing happens to quite a few people.

But if the opposite happens, and a certain new student doesn't immediately click with their new classmates, he or she should keep in mind that there may be any number of things to do and people to meet in the city or town outside campus, and these things may be worth exploring.
