McDonald’s-founded charities provide more than $80,000 in scholarships

The national restaurant chain, McDonald's, recently began posting the calorie counts of its menu options at all 14,000 of its franchises across the U.S. It's been debated whether the company did this out of genuine concern for its customers' health, to augment its dubious reputation for providing nutritional benefits or simply to get a head start on compliance with the Obama administration's healthcare reform laws.
However, it's tough to say that McDonald's has never done anything for its customers. For almost 30 years, the fast food behemoth has awarded financial aid for college through its Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) Scholars Scholarship Fund. Through December 20, 2012, students in the Philadelphia area can apply to receive between $1,000 and $5,000 in financial aid for school.
"RMHC Scholarship winners are exceptional students who excel academically while taking on extra leadership roles and volunteering in their communities," said president of the Philadelphia Region RMHC, and a McDonald's executive, Mike Anton. "We are proud to recognize their accomplishments and to help make a college education a reality."
According to a statement from the RMHC, the organization plans to dole out 55 scholarships worth a total of approximately $83,000 this year.
