Tips for meeting new people in college

May 17, 2012

You may have had a steady circle of friends from your hometown or high school, but going to college will mean a fresh start in terms of your social life. While you might have spent hours researching and scrutinizing scholarship opportunities and applications in preparation for freshman year, chances are you're feeling a little apprehensive about building an entirely new group of friends. Here are some tips to make meeting people in college a little easier.

Talk to your classmates
It might seem like parties are great places to make new friends, but you're more likely to meet people who share your interests and have compatible personalities in your chosen classes. Consider approaching classmates before and after lectures with questions about the covered material or upcoming tests as a means to break the ice.

Attend social events
During the early days of your freshman year, your school will likely host a variety of different campus events designed to introduce new students to each other. Whether it's a tailgate barbecue before a football game or a dormitory movie night, make some time to attend these freshman activities.

Join a student organization
If there's a particular organization, club or sport team that appeals to you, consider joining in an effort to meet new people and experience new things. Not only are these types of student organizations great places to socialize, but they'll also help boost your resume for your future job search.
