Grant allows Boston community college to fund scholarships

June 7, 2012

Bunker Hill Community College, the largest of Massachusetts' community colleges, has been given a $536,456 three-year grant from the National Science Foundation. The school has announced that it will be using the funding to establish a new school scholarship program, titled "Rewarding Excellence For Leaders in Engineering, Computer Science, and Information Technology," or REFLECT.

Through the REFLECT program, more than 60 students will receive two-year schooling at Bunker Hill Community College, or one year at Bunker Hill and the second at another at a four-year school of that student's choice. Scholarships will be given to those in Bunker Hill's Computer Science, Information Technology, Biomedical Engineering and Engineering Transfer programs, with special emphasis placed on leadership roles.

"Some people do not understand how community colleges build the leaders of tomorrow," said student body president Stephenson Aman, speaking to his fellow graduates at the Bunker Hill commencement ceremony on June 4th. "But everyone in here knows how good we are."

Aman was right - the 1,146 student graduating class was the largest in the school's history. This number can only grow, with the REFLECT program and other new college scholarship opportunities.
