It's not uncommon for individuals to feel like applying for college grants and scholarships is a wasted effort. Oftentimes, sponsors require a stellar grade point average and a sparkling high school resume from applicants who are interested in winning the cash prize. However, many experts say that scholarships are readily available to all types of individuals - the key is to do your homework.

Bob Jones High School college and career advisor Sheila Roberts told WAFF-TV in Alabama that the most recent graduating class were offered more than $31 million in scholarships. Although it helps to have good grades on your transcript, this isn't the only thing that sponsors look for when it comes to giving out their cash prizes.

"It really just takes research on the part of the student, because there are thousands and thousands of scholarships out there," Roberts told the news source.

While colleges are known for offering scholarships, large corporations and small businesses give out these financial resources as well to help students along. Unlike loans, scholarships do not have to be paid back after an individual finishes his or her schooling.
