Video gamers get their own scholarship opportunity
June 5, 2012
For once, being an expert video gamer might help you with college more than double-checking your calculus homework. Announced at the 2012 E3 expo, video game broadcasting community TwitchTV and gaming hardware developer Alienware are teaming up to create a scholarship for those students with a passion for gaming.
The 2012 TwitchTV and Alienware Scholarship consists of $50,000 to be split among five winning students. Applicants must provide their GPA and an essay as well as proof of their gaming abilities - they will then be judged by a series of industry experts before the winners are announced on August 15th.
Interestingly, the 2012 TwitchTV and Alienware Scholarship is not the first of its kind. The Entertainment Software Association Foundation Scholarship has been assisting women and minority students with an interest in pursuing video game-related education since 2007 and the Penny Arcade Scholarship has been operating just as long, traditionally giving $10,000 in aid to a single student currently enrolled in an accredited school of higher education.
Not only are these clearly intelligent moves on the part of the video game community to strengthen the diversity and range of its gamers and future developers, but it's an excellent opportunity for those students seeking out college scholarships and grants even after they've started their education.
