University of Dayton offers unique video scholarship opportunity

As social networking becomes more popular among young adults, scholarship sponsors are taking notice. More companies and scholarship programs are utilizing websites, such as Faecbook and Twitter, to offer valuable cash prizes to aspiring college students.

Recently, the University of Dayton in Ohio announced that it will be giving out approximately $50,000 worth of scholarships to Facebook-savvy high school students, according to The Republic. The institution says that it will ask applicants to create a video essay that expresses their dedication toward earning a postsecondary education. Although the deadline isn't until February 1, 2012, the school says it has already received thousands of videos.

"This gives students a chance to promote themselves in a creative way that is comfortable to them," Kevin Schultz, assistant director of university marketing and digital technology, told the news source. "We are hearing from students that they want opportunities to stand out, and we are trying to give them a way to do that."

In addition to applying for scholarships, high school students might also want to look for college grants. These financial resources can help curb the cost of tuition and do not have to be repaid over time.
