Studying abroad could lead to scholarship cash

October 4, 2012

Organizations that arrange accommodations for spending a semester studying in a foreign country have thousands of dollars worth of scholarships for college courses taken overseas.

The University Studies Abroad Consortium could provide qualifying students with between $300 and $2,000 per semester while they participate in one of the organization's numerous academic programs in 26 countries, according to a write-up in the Reno Gazette.

Meanwhile, Tara George-Jones, the West Virginia University Director of Study Abroad, dispelled some of the myths about studying abroad, and highlighted some of its benefits to the Daily Athenaeum. She said between financial aid for college courses abroad and exchange programs, studying abroad doesn't cost as much as many students think. She continued to point that out visiting an unfamiliar country could be an experience for students to grow as people, especially during their formative early 20s. In addition, international experience looks good on resumes in today's job market.

"It broadens your horizons," George-Jones told the news source. "It makes you comfortable with who you are. It makes you think about the U.S. in a different light because the way the world sees us is not the way we see ourselves. It definitely makes you grow up."
