Scholarships available for LGBT students
October 15, 2012
Noting that college can be a transformative experience for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) students who may have experienced discrimination in high school, USA News put together a list of scholarships that aim to give LGBT students more resources to work with as they hash out their financial planning for college.
The Point Foundation, which will be accepting scholarship applications as of Nov. 1, 2012, could provide between $5,000 and $28,000, depending on qualifying student's need, in financial aid for college. The LEAGUE Scholarship, the Matthew Shepard Memorial Scholarship, the Laurel Hester Memorial Scholarship, and the Human Rights Campaign are also noted as programs LGBT youth looking for money for college should check into. In addition, Live Out Loud could award applying LGBT students residing in New York, New Jersey or Connecticut with undergraduate scholarships.
Not every college is known for being LGBT-friendly, however Boston Magazine cites a survey from the Princeton Review states that Emerson College in Boston's downtown area is one of the most non-discriminatory colleges in the nation. The news source also points out that Harvard recently endowed a professor who specializes in LGBT studies, making it the first education for higher learning in the U.S. to do so.
