Preparing to write your college admissions essay
October 18, 2011
A college admissions essay is one of the most important aspects of the application process, and it is one of the few ways that a college can get to know about you outside of your transcript. But this isn't something you're going to sit down and crank out in a few hours - it will require significant research, adherence to the prompt and a few drafts before it's ready to go.
To start off, you should begin by reading a number of sample essays to get a good idea of the flow and voice behind many of these pieces. These examples can be found online, or you can invest in published collections of college essays as a way of formulating the layout of your writing.
You should then brainstorm a few topics and go over them with a guidance counselor or other professional. Ideally, you want your essay to give a college admissions office a window into your life and share with them why higher education can help you realize your career aspirations.
With the college scholarships and grants you'll be applying to, it's never too early to start working on your essay to wow your top choice college.
