October 27, 2011

After you've applied for college scholarships and grants and have finally set foot on campus, some people are still undecided about their ideal major. Luckily, many institutions have created a career-shadowing program that will allow you to experience a day in the life of a working professional to see if it appeals to you.

Whether you go through your college or contact a business directly, a career-shadowing program is a fabulous way to broaden your horizons and find out what works for you. If you contact a company, be cordial and explain your situation, and most of them will be receptive to your wishes.

When you're thrust into this new environment, be sure to take notes and ask as many questions as possible. Observe how this individual interacts with his employees and how his day-to-day workload is structured. This kind of first-hand experience could be invaluable when deciding on a career path.

Choosing a career is a huge decision, and you don't want to make a mistake. Luckily, there are a number of avenues that will give you real-world experience that can influence your decision.
