Can students earn scholarships by playing video games?

TwitchTV - the world's largest streaming video game service joined forces with Dell and SteelSeries to provide $10,000 in money for college to five gamers whose academic achievements are matched only by their gaming expertise. The company isn't accepting any more applications for its 2012 scholarship program, but encourages gamers with hopes for higher education to apply next year.
"We expect parents to be very surprised that their sons and daughters are applying for scholarship money because of their gaming abilities," TwitchTV vice president Matthew DiPietro told Mashable.…

That's what UMass football players Daniel Maynes and Rob O'Connor assumed when, midway through a team meeting, a pair of uniformed school cops arrived and handed them ominous-looking envelopes.

Merit-based scholarships provided to Cameroonian scholars

An American-based agriculture business is providing financial aid for college to 26 qualified Cameroonians, as part of a larger initiative to bring about a stable palm oil production project in the central African nation. Palm oil, not unlike coconut oil, is frequently used for cooking, according to the American Palm Oil Council.

Native American scholarship helps rectify racial disparity

A report from the U.S. Department of Education (DOE) shows that less than 1 percent of the American collegiate community consists of Native Americans and Alaskans, according to the Press-Enterprise.

Scholarship for early high school graduation unpopular

Only 15 teenagers have applied for the 2-year-old Jump Start Scholarship program offered by the South Dakota state government, which may provide $18,000 in financial aid for school for go-getters who graduate high school a year early. According to the Argus Leader, qualifying students would study at one of 19 participating South Carolina colleges.
