Almost $2 billion spent on standardized testing per year

Almost every state in the country requires students to pass standardized tests in math and English to receive a high school diploma, and impressive scores never hurt students' chances to get scholarships for college. Meanwhile, the Brown Center on Education Policy has released a study that estimates that, by combining the estimated $65 spent on testing per student and adjusting for states not included in the study and spending anomalies, the nation spends a total of $1.7 billion per year implementing these tests.…

Some colleges no longer requiring SAT testing

Often considered crucial for college enrollment and sometimes necessary for applying for a scholarship, SAT tests are no longer required at more than 800 institutions of higher learning in the U.S., according to research published by the National Center for Fair and Open Testing. The organization released an extensive list of schools that either don't require presumptive students take the SAT, or pay closer attention to other criteria when deciding whether or not to enroll a student.…

HuffPo op ed calls for corporate transparency at universities

The Advisory Committee on Investor Responsibility issued a letter to the Securities and Exchange Commission, which gives urgent tips for college institutions, stating that they should demand political transparency from corporations so universities can know for certain that they're affiliated with companies that reflect their values.
"Disclosure of material corporate political spending would allow shareholders to track the spending practices of the corporations they own," wrote Terra Lawson-Remer, an assistant professor at the New School and Fellow at Council on Foreign Relations, in an op-ed appearing in The Huffington Post.…

Professional women’s organization offers scholarships

The Zonta Club - an international group of executives and working people advocating for the advancement of women - has been known to provide college scholarships for single mothers, according to an article from GazetteXtra.
The online news provider points to a branch of the Zonta Club based in Janesville Wisconsin, which gave $5,000 in financial aid for single mothers to a pair of successful applicants from the Rock County community.…

Scout organizations provide scholarship opportunities

While many community organizations offer money for college, those interested in being awarded financial aid for school may want to consider looking into some of the old standbys.
For example, a group that was once a source of merit badges, camping trips and delicious cookies could be a source of money for college.
A report from the Thousand Oaks Acorn showed that the National Eagle Scout Association provides some qualifying students with financial aid for college.  The news provider said that a pair of eagle scouts - Aaron Zuckerman and Jacob Kohlhepp - have been award $3,000 scholarships from the organization, which received more than 2,500 scholarship applications from former scouts who had risen to the Boy Scouts's highest rank.…

Single mothers could get money for nursing school

According to an article appearing in the Kent Reporter, three scholarships amounting to more than $2,000 in financial aid for single mothers each will be given to unemployed unmarried moms looking to attend Blossom Nursing Assistant Training School in Kent, Washington.
"Nowadays many heads of household are single moms who have the desire to go back to school, but oftentimes cannot fulfill that ambition because of a lack of funds to realize that aspiration," the school president Doris Akinlosotu told the news source.…

In light of the importance of the tool, die and manufacturing industries to the economy of Pennsylvania, a pair of organizations are providing financial aid for school to students with technical backgrounds looking to enter these fields.
The Kenneth and Margaret Deane Scholarship, a joint venture between NuTec Tooling Systems, Inc., and the Crawford Heritage Community Foundation is offering $500 grants for education for students focusing their studies on mechanical, electrical, technical or precision engineering or robotics.…
