Alternative care package ideas

While there's no doubt that every college freshman can always use a ziplock bag filled with baked goods and a few new pairs of socks, don't be afraid to employ a little more imagination with your care packages. Most students will have enough pens, pencils and notebooks to last them a lifetime. And while a local newspaper from home is a kind gesture, it's just as easy to email them a link to the paper's website.
Instead of the usual care package items, consider sending along something new and unique - a care package that thinks outside the box. Consider these six suggestions as you put yours together.
1. Earplugs. Dorms are loud, and sometimes roommates will be up to all hours typing away at their midterm or final - and even sometimes just playing video games. Giving your freshman a pair of earplugs is giving him or her the opportunity to catch some sleep.
2. A water filter. Although your college freshman might not be too picky about filtered water, this is an excellent way to get them to drink more of it. Considering the average student's daily coffee intake, staying hydrated is an important and uphill battle.
3. Quarters. There is no more terrible fate than a broken change machine and a washing machine full of wet clothes at 1 a.m.
4. Emergency rain poncho. Attach a note telling your college student to be sure to keep this in his or her bookbag. Emergency rain ponchos are lightweight, small and, in a pinch, will keep a rainy day from turning into a rain-soaked day.
5. Chip clips. Hopefully they're avoiding the Freshman 15, but college students eat a lot of snacks - sometimes just to stay awake. Without chip clips they'll be suffering through many handfuls of stale Goldfish.
6. Scholarship information. Although it's not as exciting as a brand new video game or even a candy bar, sending along a few computer printouts on local or national scholarships will encourage your student to pursue financial aid opportunities. Applying for scholarships is one of the easiest and most essential ways for students to save money during their four years at college or university. Don't let them pass up on the chance.
