A list of safety schools is an essential part of the application process
October 11, 2011
You may have that one dream college in mind when you're starting the college application process, and you may have applied early to improve your chances of getting in. But if this falls through, you'll need a few schools as backups that you can imagine yourself being happy with.
So what makes a good safety school? To start off, you should base your decision on the strength of the degree program and the career possibilities it will afford you once you complete your education. While your first choice school may have better name recognition, you can be confident that you'll receive a quality education in other institutions.
If you're not going to make it into that gleaming private institution you may be hoping for, look into a state school or two as a way to reduce your costs. Having the school close to home may help to reduce your long-term costs as well.
The application process is a difficult time, so be sure to look into college scholarships and grants as well to ease the cost of tuition no matter where you're accepted.
