The college application process is a harrowing time of filling out forms, writing essays and securing recommendations, and many prospective students are just happy that it's over. If there's one facet of your admissions package that could use an additional review, it's likely your essay, which could be a determining factor in the college's final decision.

Go through your college essay with a fine-toothed comb and make sure that more than two pairs of eyes gets a glance at it. Even the most uplifting essay will be sold short by a bevy of typos and grammatical errors, so be sure to have it professionally edited before you send it off.

One of the shortcomings of many college essays is a student straying away from the prompt. Use this topic as a thesis statement for your piece, and constantly go back and refer to this point to allow your essay to flow naturally.

After researching college scholarships and grants, a college essay could be one of the most important factors that can make or break your chances of being admitted to your top choice university.
