Three factors that should influence your final college decision

May 4, 2012

So you've made it through the college application process, and discovered that you've been accepted into several of your college choices - congratulations! Now that you have your real options laid out before you, it's time to make a final decision. Here are three factors that should and will influence where you end up going to school.

Financial aid
College tuition is expensive, and it gets higher every year, so it's important to pick a school that offers you an acceptable amount of financial aid, if possible. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, the average annual tuition at a four-year college was nearly $33,000 during the 2009-2010 school year. While it shouldn't be the only factor you consider, the number of scholarship opportunities and amount of financial aid available to you from a college will determine your level of debt after graduation.

Campus environment
Depending on where a college is located, its campus experience can be radically different. A traditional university campus is a fairly self-contained community, while urban schools tend to be integrated into their respective cities. As this will be your home for the next four years, pick an environment that best fits your personality.

Program strength
While all of the schools you've been accepted to may allow you to pursue your intended academic field - be it English literature, business or art history among others - some of your college choices may offer a stronger program than the others. Not only will a better program provide great classes and professors, but it can connect you with industry contacts and alumni who can help you find a job after graduation.
