Extracurricular activities play an important role in your college application

When a college admissions office reviews an application, staff members will pay close attention to a prospective student's grades, letters of recommendation and other academic accomplishments. Extracurricular activities are another major aspect in this process, and it can be a real application killer if there aren't enough of these listed.

Colleges are looking for well-rounded individuals, so it would behoove students to join an academic club, a sports team or participate in theatre during their junior and senior years. This shows an admissions office that an individual took advantage of something extra that his high school had to offer and may have learned some important lessons along the way.

Joining one of these clubs can also inform a student's college essay. Speaking about a lesson that was learned in one of these settings can show a university that academics and extracurricular activities helped the applicant to learn important skills outside of the classroom.

Looking into college scholarships and grants should also be a major part of a student's application process. These college funding sources can drastically reduce the cost of tuition and limit a person's long-term debt.
