Tips for staying entertained on a budget
November 5, 2012
Many students have a difficult time holding down more than a part-time work study or minimum wage job while keeping up with their studies. But let's not forget what the old adage about how all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.
College students have to keep themselves entertained outside of their school work. However, movie and concert tickets aren't usually free, and neither are drinks and food at restaurants. Considering how expensive entertainment can be, especially in a college town, here are some tips for college students so they can save their money for college necessities and still have a good time.
Take advantage of free on-campus events
It's common for universities and colleges to host no-cost, student-only movies and musical performances. Sure, some schools may only show educational documentaries and host musical acts that would appeal to parents more than students. Other times, college's will feature recent hits from Hollywood and bring in contemporary performers that may have been suggested by the students themselves. At any rate, it's generally worth glancing at your college's event schedule to see if what's coming up.
Keep track of discounts for student IDs
It's easy to mistakenly assume that museums are the only entertainment complexes offering lower admission costs for visitors with student IDs. Not that there's anything wrong with museums. Quite the opposite, especially if they offer free entrance to college students. However, it's not unheard of for a movie theater to cut a few dollars off its usual ticket price for moviegoers with a current student ID. Some retail outlets periodically have sales where only students are entitled to the savings.
Outdoor sporty games don't cost much
Ever wonder how ultimate got so popular on campuses? Apart from how playing in groups outdoors allows participants more chances to socialize, the flying discs needed to play these games are quite affordable. Many people don't realize that "frisbee" is a registered trademark of Wham-O, so oftentimes, they'll be playing with a flying disc - not technically a Frisbee. Wham-O also owns the copyright for Hacky Sack, the Hula Hoop and the Slip 'N Slide, which can all lead to low-cost outdoor fun.
