Kansas community college offers scholarships for the unemployed

October 11, 2012

An August report from National Public Radio discussed studies which showed that, since 2007, unemployment among single mothers has doubled in the U.S. This trend makes college scholarships for single mothers coping with unemployment or underemployment more crucial than ever.

Individuals whose careers have hit a standstill in the Kansas area may be in luck. Kansas City Community College (KCCC) is doling out financial aid for college to 20 qualifying unemployed adults, covering tuition for unemployed or underemployed individuals looking for certain types of vocational employment. According to the Kansas City Kansan, applications will need to be at one of a pair of information sessions during the afternoons of Oct. 17 and Oct. 24 at the Workforce Partnership headquarters in Kansas City.

The Reno Gazette-Journal reported that a similar program has been enacted in Washoe County, Nevada. Truckee Meadows Community College (TMCC) is offering scholarships for the unemployed, or people working for minimum wage.

"The idea is to provide opportunities for unemployed and underemployed residents so they can go back to school, earn a one-year certificate and get back to work right away," Kate Kirkpatrick, manager for institutional advancement and communication and alumni at the facility.
