Jetta Operating president endows petroleum engineering scholarship
May 21, 2012
The president of the Jetta Operating Company has endowed a scholarship of $120,000 to Texas A&M, funded through the Texas A&M Foundation in the Von Gonten Scholars Program, which helps support and provide financial aid for college engineering students.
President Gregory A. Bird, who graduated A&M in 1982 and is also the owner of Jetta Operating, commented that with graduates in such high demand the petroleum industry needs more educated and advanced workers.
Bird himself graduated with a B.S. in petroleum engineering and founded Jetta Operating in 1991. It is one of the most successful privately owned oil and gas companies in the country.
This is Bird's second gift, added to the previous $60,000 scholarship he endowed to A&M in 2005. The A&M Foundation, which has handled both scholarships, is a nonprofit program that does solicitation and management for Texas A&M University, according to a story on the school's engineering website. The program is focused around helping students with scholarship opportunities and financial aid information as well.
