Legacy scholarships provided by Elks Foundation
December 21, 2012
A report from the Fort Morgan Times states that 250 Legacy scholarships from the Elks Foundation are slated to be given to 250 high school seniors. Applications are due Feb. 1 at 11 a.m., and includes $4,000 designated for grants for education for descendants of living Elks who joined the organization before April of 2010. Great-grandchildren don't qualify for the college scholarships.
According to the Elk's website, these awards will be doled out in $1,000 per-year installments, and winners will be determined by a selection committee set up by the Elks National Foundation Board of Trustees.
In addition to meeting certain academic criteria, the judges will decide winners based on the applicants displays of knowledge, charity, community and integrity, core values of the foundation.
Elks Lodges sometimes include a golf course or a pool, but the Elks website states that they're intended for more than mere entertainment. The Benevolent and Protective Order the Elks - a fraternity of veterans - explains that their organization seeks to improve their communities, and steer children away from drugs and other unhealthy choices.
