Recipients of Peyton Manning Scholarship to begin at University of Tennessee

June 21, 2012

For high school seniors Macy Harrison and Chris Barnes, the highlight of June 18 may not have been meeting star Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning. The two college-bound students joined Manning and the University of Tennessee (UT) chancellor and provost in a ceremony commending their accomplishments and awarding both scholarships to the university.
The scholarship offers the students a full ride to graduation and is funded by private gifts, academic awards garnered during Manning's time at UT as well as donations by Manning himself and his wife Ashley.…

Staying healthy through freshman year and beyond

June 19, 2012

College academics are rigorous, and they don't play well with someone who needs to spend mornings in bed recovering from his or her fifth head cold of the semester. One of the most important lessons of freshman year is to keep yourself healthy and avoid a backlog of work that will have you rushing toward the end of term.…

Managing your work-study and your actual study

June 12, 2012

One of the many college grants options for students is the Federal Work-Study program. Based on need, students will qualify for a maximum number of part-time work hours for an on campus job. Some of these positions will be cushy but potentially slow (library assistant), while others might involve a lot of work in a social and fast-moving climate (snack bar short-order chef), and some positions may actually be academic (tutor, T.A., office assistant).…

June 8, 2012

When you're accepted at most schools, you'll be given a choice as to whether you want to pay for just your education or your education plus room and board. Room and board essentially means living in a dorm and having access to the school dining halls, so are you shelling out a whole lot more money just for a place to sleep and underwhelming food?…

Saving money on textbooks

June 7, 2012

For those public school students who tend to walk into a Barnes and Noble and pick up a new paperback for fifteen dollars, the college bookstore can be a 1.21 gigawatt shock. Suddenly textbooks are going to cost you a full paycheck, and you're worried that you'll never be able to spend your Christmas money on anything fun again.
Fear not, although it's always nice to help out your school with a donation after you graduate, if you don't patronize the school bookstore while you're a student no one will hold it against you (they'll make plenty selling you mozzarella sticks and curly fries at 2am).…
